MACADI

Development of models and calculation methods for the analysis of polymer and composite structures under dynamic and impact loads

IMAST members involved:

Objective:

The overall objective of the MACADI project was to develop a numerical analysis/simulation methodology to improve the reliability of predicting the structural response of components made of composite and/or polymeric materials under the action of dynamic loads ranging from low-velocity impact to ballistic impact.
In support of the numerical methodologies, a test campaign was conducted to study the dynamic behavior of the materials used, in order to validate the laws describing the material response and acquire reliable inputs for the specific parameters of the material models implemented in the numerical codes.
The developed methodology allowed us to improve and guide the design of the component itself, thus reducing the experimental tests required for the design, with a consequent reduction in design times and costs.
During the project, numerical simulation methodologies for the impact on polymeric and composite structures were studied for low (1 – 10m/s), medium (10 – 20m/s) and very high (500 – 1000m/s) speed typologies, in order to improve the design techniques of typical components for applications in the different impact scenarios considered.
