Abstract:
Herein, different approaches are described for the preparation of hydrophobic coatings with water vapor barrier property for flexible substrates. All are based on the choice of low-cost and sustainable materials (i. e. zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) and stearic acid), exploit fast, high throughput and easy-to-run processing techniques (i.e. airbrushing and printing), and are carried out under mild reaction conditions. The results of this study indicate that best hydrophobic coating in terms of water contact angle (115°) is obtained through a two-steps printing deposition of a ZnONPs layer followed by a stearic acid layer. On the other side, the one-step printing deposition of a layer of ZnONPs pre-functionalized with stearic acid proved to be the most effective in terms of water vapor barrier properties (0.96 g/m2/day). These preliminary data are very encouraging in view of the realization of a typical multi-layer structure for encapsulating electronic devices or packaging applications.
